Santa is not the only one who should be making a list and checking it twice

On Wednesday afternoon, Choppy burst through the door after school, she had a huge smile on her face and was so excited that she had a wiggly tooth. She bravely wiggled it out as soon as she got home, and promptly placed it under her pillow to await the tooth fairy.

And the tooth fairy? She forgot.

The tooth fairy had stayed up way too late on Wednesday night, watching important shows like Kitchen Nightmares and Criminal Minds. So when the tooth fairy finally headed upstairs to bed, she made a quick check of the kiddies, dug through the laundry basket full of socks so everyone had a clean pair for the next day, and was asleep the moment her head hit her pillow.

And when she awoke in a panic the next morning, that moron of a tooth fairy knew it was too late to sneak the money under the pillow. It was prime waking up time for the kids. Any sudden movement or noise then would have been met with the start of the morning chaos. And the outing of the tooth fairy.

It didn't take the long face of Choppy that morning to tell the tooth fairy how badly she screwed up. This tooth fairy felt so bad, but there was nothing she could do to take the hurt away. Except make excuses for that moron of a tooth fairy. Whose wings had most likely iced up in the cold night making it impossible for her to fly.

Any guesses as to who this tooth fairy might be?

Y'all are just so smart.

I have not always been so disorganized. I used to be quite organized and on top of things. I was formerly a big fan of The List. I made a list for everything, and it was with great flourish that I would cross off my tasks, one by one. In colored ink, of course.

I had a list for every occasion. And the lists were kept in brightly colored spiral notebooks. Of course, I had lists for the obvious reasons; groceries, meals, cleaning projects, errands, but I also had lists that were a bit more detail oriented.

There was the Books to Read list, and the list of Movies to See. I had a list for Restaurants I Wanted to Try, and one for Cars I Wanted To Own. Of course I had a list of my favorite baby names, a boy and a girl edition, which I even signed and made my then boyfriend, now husband, sign too. In ink. And he didn't even run screaming away from the crazy lady with the colored pens.

There was even a list on Routes to Take Whilst Walking The Dog.

Eventually, the lists stopped. The more kids I had, the less lists I wrote. And really, I think it worked out for the best. Otherwise I would have four kids named Shelby, Darby, Jackson, and Gretchen.

Apparently around 1993 I was a huge fan of movies that starred Julia Roberts. And also, was extremely proud of my German roots.

Now, I don't even have time to sit down and make a list. And if, on the rare occasion I do make a list of things I need to pick up at the store, it is usually written on some random scrap of paper found in my purse. And most of the time, when I get to the place where I need to pull out the haphazardly written list, I usually cannot find it.

I need to bring back The List habit.

And the first thing on it needs to be Remember You Are The Frickin' Tooth Fairy.

Great story! I lapsed once and felt so awful when she came in our room all teary eyed....but the haze of early AM cleared quickly in my head and I saved the day by asking.."are you sure you checked everywhere"- as I meandered to her room with $$ in hand..."Oh look RaRa it must have fallen when you loved your pillow!" Whew! But I never forgot that near miss and won't go to bed until it is done now...

This is about the 3rd person I've heard in the past few days who has forgetten their very important job of tooth fairy! I think it's pretty common - don't sweat it! Tooth Fairy's can be VERY busy!

If you haven't, you've just gotta read this book (you know, with all of your spare time - but it's soooo worth it): Mooseltoe...here's a link:

It's all about the list and how to make do when you forget the most important thing! It's sooooo very cute!

Holiday Blessings,
Jen

I've done it too, Lisa. And so have most of my friends...

Write a note explaining the absence with the cash tonight...worked like a charm for me :)

The tooth fairy in our house is....A MAN!!!

Because I would NEVER remember and I go to bed right after the Noodle does :)

And, hey - it HAS been cold. Sometimes those wings just need to thaw and then the tooth fairy makes it up to the kid. Because, you know, she's good for it, right? (wink, wink)

Good luck! And I can't believe Choppy just yanked out her own tooth! When I was little, I'd let it get all scuzzy and gross.

martha

I think my parents had this one right... we put our teeth in a shot glass filled with water on a windowsill. I don't know the reason they gave us; I'll have to ask now, but that's what we did. We'd wake up and the tooth would be gone. In it's place were coins in the water. Mom and Dad never got caught. Maybe you could tell Choppy she put it in the wrong place and drag out a shot glass! just kidding.

Ahhh. The lists. You and I are so much a like! And colored ink, too! I am still a fan of list, but I've upgraded my grocery list. I found that I was writing the same things each week, so I made a spreadsheet of the common items I need and organized them by aisle! If you want a copy, let me know! LOL!

OH NO!! Our tooth fairy is inconsistent in the amount of money left for each tooth, but so far, she hasn't missed any tooth losings. Of course, there are only two kids in this house and only one of tooth-losing age, so we'll see how it works in a couple of years when both girls are droppin' their chompers.

I've been caught trying to sneak in right before they wake up in the morning because I forgot to take care of my tooth fairy duties the night before. So, now I've ruined all the fun that comes from believing in the tooth fairy because they know it's just mom. They still are happy to take the money though. :)

oh i always forget. my kids have finally come to expect it. there was this one time they got up and were eating breakfast and i remembered then i coyly had emeline go make her bed (which we never do) and she didn't even find it then so i had to go move the pillows for her. gah!

Oh, my. Been there. I pulled the, "oh...let's check under the bed to see if you knocked it off during the night". Yikes. I, too, love the lists. I keep a stack of index cards (without lines) that I use for lists. They are a great size to keep in my purse, car, etc.

Yes, I haven't done this yet, but I'm sure that I will. Try forgetting to put out the Santa gifts (my mom) and her eldest daughter (me) having to go jump in bed w/ the youngest child while Santa made a little too much noise in the living room at 8 am in the morning (on Christmas morning, that is).

Got her by way of The Queen B and I'm really enjoying your blog.

When my daughter's first tooth fell out last year, we forgot too. (And by we I really mean he because my husband has decided he'll be the Tooth Fairy in our house.) She was disappointed, initially, but she loved the note the Tooth Fairy left the following night, explaining her unfortunate accident that kept her from fulfilling her duties.

(Great post, by the way. The whole thing had me laughing!)

My kids think the tooth fairy comes at about seven a.m. They wake up at six, go downstairs to watch t.v., and the tooth fairy magically appears when they come back up after breakfast. I told them that we just must be the last stop on her route. Try that one. Then if you forget again, it's no surprise.

oops.

love your reason for the tooth fairy not making it.

Olivia Whitetooth and Ivana Goldtooth have not yet forgotten their toothless friends, but there's always the next time!

I have a deep dark secret to confess: Our tooth fairy pillow currently has 3 teeth residing in the pocket, all belonging to my daughter. She now has a fourth loose tooth. Maybe the tooth fairy will show up before that one falls out. I can't post about it on my blog since she is my most loyal reader.

My daughter lost a tooth on vacation at Kiawah Island this summer. We made a HUGE deal about how she'd still find us, even though we weren't home -- we even sent the tooth fairy an email to let her know where we were.

Yeah. We forgot.

I've never seen my daughter so upset -- ever.

Needless to say, the tooth fairy was awfully generous the next night . . . .

the toothfairy at our house got more and more lame with each child - now Boo's personal toothfairy is absolutely pathetic.

Rachel Anne said...

I don't even want to talk about the lame tooth fairy at our house. Oy.

As for the lists......I keep thinking maybe a blackberry would solve all my problems but until then, my small spiral will have to do. If I can just remember where it is...

Yikes! Poor Choppy AND poor frazzled Tooth Fairy. Sigh. I'm sure I will join you in this club someday. I need to make more lists--there is something so rewarding about crossing things off, like you said, with a flourish.

That was funny about the names--babies sporting all the popular movie or soap opera names. Ha!

Oh man...ya know...we just can't remember it all.

Thankfully, this issue has NOT had to make it to my list...yet.

I love checking things off a list. Unfortunately, I have usually forgotten to write something on the list and, therefore, forget way too many things these days!

Hope Choppy forgives the Toothfairy!

It worked! It doesn't link back to me, but I can comment again, yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Loved reading this! Got me thinking about that ad on TV, for a credit card I think, where the little girl complains to the Tooth Fairy about what coins have been left.

Maybe Santa can redeem what the TF forgot?
